NEIU / UPI CHAPTER SECRETARY

Nanette Potee

Like many of you, I am dedicated to help build and maintain an atmosphere of respect and professionalism across our campuses.  We have opportunities for change and growth that I would like to be part of.  Therefore, I am honored to have been nominated and have chosen to run for the position of NEIU/UPI chapter secretary.

As I understand it, the secretary is responsible for organizing events and general administrative duties.  But I would also like to be involved in encouraging more involvement by all constituents in our union, through a variety of avenues and events.  I want to hear more voices and see more faces involved in the production of a positive environment that honors our students, staff, teachers and administrators.  Rather than being divisive let us be deliberate in coordinating our experiences, passions, views and beliefs in order to better serve one another.

Susan Rosa

I am running for Secretary of the UPI Chapter at Northeastern Illinois University. I have been an assistant and associate professor in the History Department at NEIU for about twelve years. I am committed to the creation of a stronger and more formidable chapter that can better withstand the efforts of the NEIU administration to increase faculty workload and more effectively represent the interests of all academic professionals.

Lidia Filus

I have been at NEIU since 1985. I hold understanding and serving the university community as important priorities. I have served the University in different capacities. Secretary of the Faculty Senate, Secretary and Chair of the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs, Budgetary Council, University Personnel Committee, Chair of Arts & Sciences College Assembly, Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences, member of IBHE Working Group on Redesigning Program Review are a few examples of my service to NEIU. I have served UPI as Chapter Treasurer, House of Delegates representative, department representative, facilitator of Salary/Negotiation Committee, member of Workload Task Force. I wish to continue the service to the Union as Chapter Treasurer.  My extensive service in the NEIU faculty governance system speaks to my commitment and strong organizational skills which will be of benefit both to the leadership and to the membership I would serve.

Russell Benjamin

I would like to be a constituency representative (tenured and tenure-track) for the College of Arts and Sciences. This position would allow me to continue my long-standing commitment to UPI. With the issues facing workers both at NEIU, it is imperative that workers in CAS have committed advocates for their interests.

Judy Kaplan-Weinger

Each of us pursued a career in education because we were academically committed to the field we fell in love with and exhilarated by the opportunity to pass that love onto others.  Each of us wants to be allowed to and supported in the practice of our field – in teaching, in research, and in service.  When elements of the University environment preclude our pursuit of these endeavors and, in the process, not only demonstrate disrespect for our knowledge, skills, and efforts, but, more importantly, for our students’ rights to develop the same skills and knowledge we have, we must speak to those obstacles.  I believe in consistent, honest conversation across and among all levels of this university and that only through transparency can this or any other university function effectively for the good of its students and the larger university community.

NEIU / UPI CHAPTER CAS Rep I

Deberah S. Bernstein

I am running for constituency representative and have been an instructor in Justice Studies and a faculty member in Women’s Studies for ten years at Northeastern. Going forward I would like to see the union remain strong and representative of both the non-tenured and tenured track faculty  I feel that both groups must work together to ensure the security and status of all teaching faculty and to promote academic freedom. My background as an employment lawyer will lend to my ability to represent my constituency.  After ten years of teaching at Northeastern I am fully apprised of the issues affecting non-tenured track faculty.

Richard Grossman

I have been an Instructor here at NEIU for about a decade so I feel that I am familiar with many of the problems that my fellow Instructors face. I have been an active union member every since I was eligible.  Currently I am one of the two Instructor representatives on the negotiating team. I am also a member of the House of Delegates. I have been teaching for many years always as an adjunct, instructor, or whatever we have been called over the years. There were points where I taught at four schools during one semester.  Currently I teach “only” at NEIU and one other university. Before getting my degree I spent a number of years as a union organizer. I was on the staff of the United Farm Workers and then worked in an iron foundry where I led an organizing drive. For all these reasons, I am .
