WIU / UPI CHAPTER VICE-PRESIDENT

William Thompson

I believe in the union because without it, I wouldn't be paid what I get paid, have the benefits I have, the freedom in the workplace to pursue what I want to pursue. I am passionate about the benefits the union has given me and others. I plan on protecting and extending them. For example: In the last contract negotiation I took the lead on the union side on the parental leave benefit. UPI got a good benefit for its members, a benefit that was extended to the entire university community. I have already begun working with other UPI leaders to craft an elder care benefit. I am also interested in protecting and extending where appropriate the procedural protections UPI has put in place for its members. The union is one of the best things about WIU. It's what makes our RTP process transparent. It protects us against reprisals and capricious administrators. It has made the campus more family friendly. I want to give back to the union what it has given to me--a productive, secure future.

WIU / UPI CHAPTER TREASURER

Richard Filipink

My name is Richard Filipink and I am running for the office of treasurer for our UPI chapter. I believe it is time to bring new faces, new ideas, and a stronger commitment to an active union to the executive board. I consider serving the interests of the membership the executive board’s primary job, and pledge to put the good of the members first in any dealings with the university’s administration.

I bring to the table experience in union service. I served on the union’s executive board as Part-time Concerns Officer at SUNY Fredonia before coming to Western Illinois University. As a leader in an activist union, my experience will benefit our chapter in forthcoming contract negotiations.

In conclusion, as Steve Rock said at the candidate nomination meeting, we need new blood on the union executive board.  Here is an opportunity to begin the process of revitalizing our union.

Steven Rock

I have served as Treasurer of the WIU UPI chapter since 1996 and would like to continue for another term. During my tenure, I closely scrutinized all chapter spending and I would describe my philosophy as being fiscally conservative. I compile the regular financial reports required by the Local and view them as public documents and welcome any member of the collective bargaining unit to look them over and ask questions. Over the years, our campus treasury has grown and is now quite healthy.

On my own initiative, I regularly distribute a list of those in the collective bargaining unit who are not UPI members to departmental representatives and UPI campus leaders. This effort has been successful as our membership rate expanded and is now over 75%!

As a member of the Executive Board, I have attempted to bring to the table perspectives of those who do not always agree ....
