Nominations

• Job descriptions for Local 4100 offices and for Chapter offices are available on this Web site. See menus to the left and below. All offices are open. This is a general election for all members of the University Professionals of Illinois, Local 4100, IFT, AFT, AFL-CIO.

• The term of office for all positions is 3 years.

DEADLINES

Jan. 16, 2009 — DEADLINE: to appoint Nominating Committee by chapter executive board

Jan. 16 - Feb. 6, 2009 — Chapter Nominating Committee solicits candidates for Chapter and Local elections.

Feb. 17, 2009 — DEADLINE: to become a member to vote in election.

Feb. 6 - Feb. 27, 2009 — Chapter membership meetings solicit nominations from the floor and present results of the Nominating Committee.

Feb. 27, 2009 — DEADLINE: to submit nominations from chapters and name of chapter observer to UPI office

Feb. 27 - March 9, 2009 — IFT prepares ballots and instructions.

March 9 - March 20, 2009 — Ballots are proofread by chapter presidents, chairs of chapter Nominating Committees and chair of Trustees/Audit Committee.

March 30, 2009 — Ballots are mailed.

April 17, 2009 — DEADLINE: to postmark completed ballots to IFT.

April 24, 2009 -- Election ballots are counted by IFT and results announced

• Nominations for both Local 4100 offices and Chapter offices may be made through either a chapter's Nominations Committee or from the floor during a chapter membership meeting held between Feb. 9 and March 13, 2009.

• Anyone nominated for any office must provide a current valid email address.


Ballots

• Elected officers will not be involved in the handling of ballots. Trustees will be responsible for the election activity.

• The order of names for all contested offices and delegates will be determined by lottery.

• Candidates may observe the duplicating and mailing of ballots, at their own expense.


Campaigning and Information

• Candidates wishing to mail literature to members may contact the chair of the of the Trustees / Audit Committee, which selected two firms that were given the Local 4100 mailing list. Candidates will make arrangements to have literature printed and mailed to this mailing list, at the candidate's expense.

• A clearly organized Web page will contain brief biographical and position information for each candidate. This Election Page will be available through links on both the UPI Local 4100 Web site and the chapter Web sites.

• Candidates may provide the biographical / position information for posting on this site, with these limitations:

-- Word count will be limited to 150 words. Submissions longer than that will be truncated.

-- The bio / position info will not be edited.

-- The bio / position info may include one link to another Web site where additional information is provided, but the director of communications and Local 4100 are not responsible for the link being accurate or active.

• Chapter Web sites will include a link to the Local 4100 page but will not have independent biography, position or campaigning pages different from Local 4100 Web site. Chapter Web sites that provide bio / position info must provide information for all candidates to be voted on.

• If requested, the director of communications will provide to the chapter president all bio / position info relevant to a particular chapter for distribution on paper. A chapter choosing to distribute such information at its expense will not edit or alter the content of the statements, nor reorder them.

• Chapters are encouraged to publicize the existence and location of the bio / position info to their members.

• List serves maintained by the chapters or Local 4100 may not be used to distribute any campaign materials.

• All bio / position info will be made available at the same time. A candidate may request that his or her entire statement be removed from the site.


Tallying the Votes

• The Illinois Federation of Teachers will count the ballots. The UPI Trustees / Audit Committee will oversee the counting of the ballots.

• The date and location of the counting of the ballots will be published to the membership. All candidates for office are entitled to observe the process, at their own expense.


Reporting the Results

• The names of winners will be posted on the Local 4100 Web site as soon as it is practical.

• The number of votes that each candidate received will be reported to the UPI executive board and the Trustees / Audit Committee. Chapter presidents may determine how those results can be provided to members of the chapter.
