Faculty Workload

WHEREAS
appropriate faculty workloads are necessary to promote academic
excellence; and
WHEREAS
the creation of new knowledge and ideas through research and creative
activity offers great benefit to society; and
WHEREAS
involvement in research or creative activity in oneŐs field enhances
a professorŐs ability to teach students, both undergraduate and
graduate, to think, communicate, and succeed in that field; and
WHEREAS
involvement in research or creative activity ensures that a professor
remains current in her/his field; and
WHEREAS
a professorŐs mentoring of student research, both undergraduate
and graduate, greatly enhances and deepens that studentŐs educational
experience; and
WHEREAS
such mentoring of students requires that the professor also be
engaged in research or creative activity; and
WHEREAS
the production of original research or creative activity is among
the expectations required for tenure and promotion at most, if
not all, of the member institutions served by UPI;
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED that UPI work to ensure that the faculty
be assigned teaching duties ranging from 6-9 contact hours per
week in order to encourage and maintain active engagement in the
production of research or creative activities;
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in order to ensure that adequate
time is assigned to research and creative activity, UPI work to
guarantee that the average teaching load should be no more that
nine hours of contact hours per week.
