Board of Trustees Appointments
Eastern Illinois University

WHEREAS Boards of Trustees of Illinois public universities are charged with making many crucial policy decisions at their universities; and

WHEREAS Boards of Trustees approve tenure decisions, hire university presidents, and vote on other issues that affect the academic mission of the university; and

WHEREAS appointments to Boards of Trustees of public universities in the state are made by the Governor of Illinois; and

WHEREAS the qualifications, ethics, and social attitudes of the trustees profoundly influence the missions and the functioning of the universities that they oversee;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: UPI urge the Governor of Illinois to apply the following criteria in selecting university trustees and that UPI work with the Governor to identify candidates who meet these criteria:

• Respect for university governance that is shared by all constituent groups
• Respect for democratic principles and procedures
• Serious commitment to public higher education in the State of Illinois
• Demonstrated commitment to quality education at all levels
• Understanding of higher education and the academic missions of Illinois public universities
