Cessation of Use of Appropriated Funds for Intercollegiate Athletics

WHEREAS: the IBHE recommended in November 1993 and again in November 1994 that direct support for intercollegiate athletics be phased-out by the end of fiscal year 1996;

WHEREAS: public universities in FY 2001 expended $4.9 million from appropriated state funds and university income funds for intercollegiate athletics;

WHEREAS: some universities expend over $1 million a year in appropriated state funds and university income funds for intercollegiate athletics;

WHEREAS: public universities have had their appropriated budgets cut by an average of 9.1% from FY 2002 to FY 2003;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: that UPI promote efforts to ensure that appropriated state funds and university income funds to intercollegiate athletics be phased out by FY 2005 and the resources redirected to support faculty and staff salaries.
