Working Conditions for Adjunct Faculty
Drafted by Carol Stevens and Janice Coons, Eastern Illinois University

WHEREAS public colleges and universities in Illinois rely heavily on adjunct faculty; and

WHEREAS adjunct faculty are often denied such professional treatment as assignment of contracts in a timely manner and multi-year contracts; and

WHEREAS adjunct faculty are routinely rendered invisible by failure to list them by name in class schedules; and

WHEREAS adjunct faculty are routinely not provided with appropriate support, including adequate office space, telephone facilities, or directory listings so that their students can locate them conveniently; and

WHEREAS adjunct faculty are frequently assigned committee work, administrative responsibilities, and other work for which they are neither evaluated nor compensated; and

WHEREAS as a result of these factors adjunct faculty work in a climate of uncertainty in which they may fear to risk their jobs by expressing dissatisfaction with these conditions;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that UPI call upon the IBHE and the state legislature to implement policies which redress these inequities in the treatment of adjunct faculty at public universities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that UPI consider redress of inequities in the treatment of adjunct faculty at public universities a priority issue in the negotiation of contracts.
