Study Shows 34% Increase in Administrative Staff at Public Universities since 1993: Administrator to student ratio up 37%; Teacher to student ratio up only 6.5%
September 5, 2002, report, the first ever comparative review of teaching and administrative staff levels at public Universities in the State of Illinois, released by UPI, Local 4100. Aministrative staff levels and budget expenditures between FY 1993 and FY 2003 have grown far faster than they have for teaching staff. Of particular concern to students and parents, the ratio of students to administrators increased nearly 6 times faster than the student to teacher ratio.
Revenue,
Budget Priorities and Higher Education Spending in the Fifty
States:
A report prepared by the University Professionals
of Illinois for the Illinois Board of Higher Education,
offers an initial look at differences among the 50 states.
The report is limited to compensation and other budget-related
issues. One interesting point, in the National Center report
card, Illinois was followed closely in the overall rankings
by Connecticut (#2) and New Jersey (#3), two states that
also rank #2 and #3 in salaries for public university faculty-a
factor not included in the report card's analysis. Faculty
salaries provide one measure of a state's commitment to
high quality teaching. Illinois does not even approach the
top 10 on that scorecard. Feb. 6, 2001.
