Breaking News: Faculty union sees Illinois State University budget cuts as a shock and a blow to morale

NORMAL (25News Now) - Illinois State University professors are dealing with the shock of across-the-board budget cuts and pay freezes as two teachers’ unions negotiate a new contract.

In an email sent across campus this week by ISU’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, all divisions must immediately cut spending by 2%. It’s up to each department to determine how to make those reductions.

Pluymers is also on the United Faculty of ISU’s negotiating team. He said what’s most disappointing is that the administration has not participated in any bargaining in the past seven months.

According to Pluymers, his union presented in February a proposal with a costed-out economic report based on internal and external analyses that found ISU is in a strong financial position.

“We’re very disappointed that the university administrators have taken this opportunity not to engage with us at the table with economic proposals, which they have never given us despite having ours seven months ago, and instead to come out with a series of email communications that go heavy on fear and that are light on facts,” Pluymers said.
