SB 331 passed out of the Senate Higher Education Committee tonight. This bill requires "public university and community college districts to pay employees and contractors their daily, regular rate of pay and benefits if a campus is closed due to a city, county, or State declaration of a winter weather emergency."
The bill originated from a HOD resolution from our UIS Staff Chapter.
Thank you Senator Doris Turner for sponsoring this bill. There is likely an amendment to this bill that will not impact the primary goal. University and community college employees should not be forced to lose a day of pay or risk coming to work during a winter storm.
The bill will soon move to the floor of the State Senate. We will need phone calls of support.
