UIS, WIU & SIUE led grant in Illinois for the “Journeys to Justice: Commemorating and Memorializing the History and Legacy of Anti-Black Terror in Illinois,”

The Illinois Innovation Network awarded $30,000 to a new social innovation seed grant project this week. Provided by the University of Illinois System, the funding is designed to translate research into projects that directly affect lives, address critical social problems and build trusted partnerships in communities across Illinois.


This project will launch a statewide coalition to promote and support the research and remembrance of anti-Black riots, massacres and lynchings in Illinois.


The professors in volved are University of Illinois Springfield associate professors Devin Hunter and Lesa Johnson, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville assistant professor Tandra Taylor and Western Illinois University professor Peter Cole. The grant will help with a trip to Equal Justice Initiative sites in Montgomery, Alabama, and a follow-up symposium in Springfield this fall.
